Overview of Actuated Ball Valves | How They Work, Specifications & Options

What are Actuated Ball Valves: Description, Common Uses and Specifications

Description

Actuated ball valves are rotating ball type pipe valves that come without manual turn handles to allow installation with an actuator. The valves are used together with an actuator device to automate valve opening and closing and therefore control plumbing fluid rates. This automation removes the need for direct worker interaction at the valve. Our actuated ball valves are ready for use with electric, hydraulic and pneumatic (air) type actuators. The valves are not suitable for use without an actuator and must be fitted with one for operation. They come without mounting kits to allow compatibility across actuator models and brands as mounting kits are specific to actuator types. ISO 5211 mounting pads are available that can provide direct mounting of the valve to your intended actuator device.

Application

Actuator ready ball valves integrate into systems to moderate valve opening and closure. They are often fitted with gauge monitors or flow meters to measure flow. Actuated valves are commonly used within industrial processes, manufacturing factories, chemical handling, food and beverage facilities, mining operations, power plants and energy sector use such as refineries. They are also frequently used in wastewater handling, municipal treatment facilities, clean water production, aquariums, aquatics and animal care, chemical synthesis, metals and plating operations.

Specifications

Manufacture

Our actuated ball valves are USA manufactured by Hayward®. The valves are synthetic thermoplastic materials molded from Cell Class 12454 type poly vinyl chloride (PVC) and Cell Class 23447 type chlorinated poly vinyl chloride (CPVC). Both PVC and CPVC actuator valves are made to ASTM D1784 and ANSI / NSF 61 standards acceptable for use in potable (drinking) water handling. They are certified lead free plumbing per ANSI / NSF 372 and the Safe Water Drinking Act (SDWA).

Sizes

All actuated ball valve series have size ranges from 1/2” to 6” fitting diameters. Complete valve pipe sizes include: 1/2", 3/4", 1”, 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 2”, 2-1/2", 3”, 4”, and 6”. Extra sizes, larger, and non-standard type actuator valves can be fabricated on request.

Connections

Actuator valve connection types are flange, threaded, socket, or socket with thread. The valves feature an integrated foot pad that allows versatile installation such as on skids or panels. Hayward® actuated ball valves come in single True Union or 3 Way True Union style that provide secure plumbing joints. 3 Way True Union types come in lateral or vertical arrangement.

Seals

All actuated valves come with FPM rubber gasket seals that provide high chemical and mechanical resistance. EPDM rubber type o-rings are available for scenarios where FPM may not be compatible. Double o-ring FPM Viton gasket stem seals are standard. Valves feature reversible valve seats manufactured from high durability PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene; Teflon™).

Actuated Ball Valve Series

Available Hayward® actuator valves come in TW, CVH, HCLA, and TBH series models with TW, TP, CF or Z-Ball series ball types available. Individual valve performance specifications vary by select series.

TW Series

Rated up to 150 PSI (10.3 bar) @ 70 °F (21 °C). Comes in 3-way ball valve types with 90˚ NT style ball. TW, TP, and CF balls are also available.

Products: TW Series Actuator Ready Ball Valves

CVH Series

Rated up to 250 PSI (17.2 bar) @ 70 °F (21 °C) with System2™ sealing technology. Features a Profile2™ characteristic ball for proportional flow configurations and two linear flow curves options. One option is fast opening and the other is slow opening. Slow opening type is standard and fast opening must be requested. CVH series have permanent valve markings that eliminate the need for labels.

Products: CVH Series Actuator Ready Ball Valves

HCLA Series

Rated up to 150 PSI (10.3 bar) @ 70 °F (21 °C). Comes in a 3-way, 90˚ ball valve style. Same as the LA Series ball valves but without a handle or mounting kit to prime the valve for actuator installation and use.

Products: HCLA Series Actuator Ready Ball Valves

TBH Series

Rated up to 250 PSI (17.2 bar) @ 70 °F (21 °C). Features System2™ technology with two-direction seals not requiring seat adjustments during valve service life. Model comes in single true union ball valve types with NT style ball with TW, TP, and CF balls available. TBH series have permanent valve markings present to eliminate the need for labels.

Products: TBH Series Actuator Ready Ball Valves

TBH Series with Z Ball

Rated up to 250 PSI (17.2 bar) @ 70 °F (21 °C). Features System2™ sealing technology in single true union ball valve types with innovative Z-Ball. Z Balls are engineered to improve sodium hypochlorite (bleach; NaOCl) fluid situations by reducing crystallization and oxygen locking problems common in bleach applications.

Products: TBH Series with Z Ball Actuator Ready Ball Valves

Actuated Ball Valve Options

Actuator valve options include: extensions to the valve head stem length, handle spring return, lockout tagout mechanism plate, and manual limit switches.

Actuated Ball Valves are Right for You if….

Actuated ball valves are the right choice if you plan to use an actuator device to automate operation of a plumbing flow system, if you have valves in difficult access areas, or if you want to eliminate the need for worker and valve interaction.
